If you've seen Interstellar, the 2014 film about a guy who goes to space to find a new world to live on since earth was dying, only to find out there's a place between space and time where he can send his past self messages, then this will be an easy one for you. Remember how the main character Cooper tried sending himself messages through the library between space and time? Think of Malkuth as the messages, and the guy in the space-time library sending out signals as the Kether (source energy). His messages were the physical results of activities in the ether. Just as the physical world is the result of etheric activities.
It is what happens when Kether lowers its vibrational frequency with the goal to manifest itself and its desires into the physical 3D realm. In the Musings of Alan Watts (link below) he said “an energy system is not an energy system till it lets go of itself.” like a breath isn't a breath till you let go and breath out and back in, thus the tree of life is an energy system that lets go of itself in order to return to itself.
Kether sparks the process of creation in the ether and fills and structures itself in order to manifest Malkuth (The physical realm). At the point in which Malkuth is manifest it begins the process of letting go of all that it has created in order to return into itself. Lots of people have speculated why this happens, I think it's a way for Kether to explore itself and get to know more about itself. Like journaling in order to sort out your thoughts and emotions, but that's only my theory. . .
